Pittsburgh Fiber Friends

Hey Pittsburgh!

I’m really excited to announce the start of something new and local for Made by Hand… Introducing: Pittsburgh Fiber Friends! This is a meetup group I’m starting to get to know the fiber arts community in my city better. There are so many of us, and I’d love to have the opportunity to meet with you!

What is it?

Pittsburgh Fiber Friends is all about inspiring and teaching each other. Each event will have a new “theme” or topic that will guide the time we spend together towards expanding our knowledge of our art. There are a series of standard themes that will be used for the majority of events, however many interesting opportunities will be created as the group grows!

Standard Themes:

  • Stitch Party – Just a good old sip & stitch evening! Bring your current WIP, something good to drink, and join us for a night of good company and lots of yarn. If the stitch party is being held at a cafe or brewery, try something new from the menu and maybe find your new favorite Pittsburgh hangout spot!
  • Hone a Skill – These events will, obviously, be devoted to learning or honing a specific skill. Everyone is welcome to join, even if they just want to sit and stitch. We welcome stitchers of all skill levels!
  • More to Come!

Where is it?

This group is local to Pittsburgh, PA but we welcome anyone, anytime! Just visiting the city? Come say hello! Live in Greensburg/Cranberry/Washington but want to make new friends? Take a drive into the city for an evening of fiber friends!

Another key factor to this group is exploring the beautiful city many of us call home. Pittsburgh is full of interesting venues that we can gather in to craft new ideas and experiences together as a community. I’m always on the lookout for cool new venues, but they are mainly coffee shops, cafes, breweries, and book stores.

The “default” meeting venue will be various locations of Carnegie Library. The library is a crucial part of the Pittsburgh community, and I’d love to utilize their resources to bring more attention to what they have to offer. Library cards are free to PA residents and they have tons of books on knitting/crochet! Need to look up a pattern? Use their public computers to search Ravelry and print out what you need.

When is it?

Events take place the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. This allows for ample planning time for everyone involved since the venue often changes.

They are always scheduled for the evening so they will play nice with most work schedules! Most are 2 hours long, from 6 PM – 8 PM.

Occasionally, special events will be scheduled for specific dates, but will be announced as far in advance as possible.

Check the calendar to see what’s coming up and come join us for some good friends and good times!

You can also join the Pittsburgh Fiber Friends Facebook group to join the conversation about events before they happen. Meet your new fiber friends before the event, or connect with them afterwards to stay in touch!
